Is the Barcode dead?

Dec 31, 2024

Not dead but evolving.  To most people, when they hear the word ‘barcode’, they envision the vertical bars arranged horizontally on a product or label.  A UPC code is an example of this.  This barcode was developed 50 years ago, and revolutionized modern product labeling.

The limits of this 50-year-old technology is catching up fast, and new technologies like the QR code are quickly becoming the standard.  There are many benefits to QR Codes, or 2D barcodes, which enable much more information to be stored in a smaller footprint.  They are easily scanned by many device types and are very durable.

There are so many benefits to the 2D barcodes that the GS1 (Global Standards) organization has set the end of 2027 as the date POS or POC industries need to ensure that all devices can scan both 1D and 2D barcodes.  Now this doesn’t mean 1D barcodes stop working, but it does mean that there will be a huge push to get the global supply chain upgraded to 2D technology by the end of 2027.

Here’s the good news.  MobileManage is already capable of producing and using 2D technology.   As your customers start requiring your products to be shipped to support these new standards, rest assured that MobileManage is ready for the Job.
